Late-life depression: the signs families miss and what you can do

Psychologist Deniz Toprak · Doctor & Health Professional · 20 August 2026 · 6 min read

Depression in older adults is often mistaken for "just aging". Which signs to take seriously, how families can help, and when to seek professional support.

The sentence I hear most often in sessions is: "They are old, it is normal." Yet constant apathy, withdrawal and loss of joy are not a natural part of aging — they can be signs of treatable depression. In older adults, depression looks different than in the young, which is exactly why it gets missed.

Why does it get missed?

Older adults rarely put sadness into words; physical complaints come forward instead: aches, sleep problems, loss of appetite, forgetfulness. Families attribute this picture to physical illness or dementia, and the psychological side stays invisible.

Signs to take seriously

What can the family do?

Transport and stigma are the two biggest barriers keeping older adults from psychological support. Online sessions remove both: the individual joins from home, with a family member alongside if they wish.

When is it urgent?

Self-harm or statements like "I no longer want to live" are urgent at any age; do not wait — seek professional help the same day and call emergency services if needed. Outside of that, an assessment session with a psychologist clarifies the road map for both the individual and the family.
